Electronic Design of Compact Power Supply Unit for Various Voltages in Ultrasound Transient Elastography

J. Jean Rossario Raj; S. M. K Rahman; Anand Sneh
Ultrasound Transient Elastography is an emerging non invasive imaging technique used in medical field for the detection of tumors. The machines using this technique require various input DC voltages in various stages of analog, digital and high voltage pulser MOSFETs to produce high voltage excitation of piezoelectric crystals generating ultrasound waves. Transient Elastography requires simultaneous excitation of crystals as against conventional Ultrasonography machines. The MOSFETs in Pulsar is given different high voltage inputs like ±80V, ±40V, ±20V for achieving different depths. It also requires ±12V, ±5V for gate drive and level translation stages. The digital IC’s require 3.3V DC input. All the voltages are generated from a first stage +12V regulator with a/c mains input. The +12V DC single input is used to derive other voltages at required current ratings using switching regulators. The Switching regulators operating at more than 100 KHz make the design very compact with efficiency greater than 90%.
