- In order to understand the increasing complexity of operational business within an organization, its working procedures are mapped onto process models. In this context, the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) has become the de-facto standard for process modeling. BPMN is mainly a graphical notation aiming to narrow the gap between business and IT. Past BPMN research has developed satisfactory solutions for the scopes of evaluation, semantics, execution and compliance. These results provide a formal basis for further research as well as industrial application possibilities. Because BPMN now has reached a certain degree of maturity, it is necessary to specify new research topics meeting demands of users and also future requirements of process modeling and Business Process Management (BPM). To answer this question, this paper examines present BPMN research on the base of an extensive literature review. In this respect, most relevant articles concerning BPMN are to be analyzed and related to each other on a content level. Based on these results, this work also illustrates prospective BPMN topics for possible addressing in future research activities. This study shows that current BPM(N) research is a fragmented topic having interfaces with neighboring and superordinated research fields. It is also explained how future research activities might benefit from consolidating measures as well as from an orientation towards Value-oriented Business Process Management.
