- There are many noise sources causing electromagnetic interference in power transmission lines. As voltage of transmission lines is higher, generated harmonics radiated from these lines interfere considerably with different communication instruments. One of electromagnetic interference sources in power transmission lines is contaminated insulator. In this paper, electromagnetic radiation patterns radiated from contaminated insulator strings are simulated in the CST software in 450 MHz (LTE) and 900 MHz (GSM). The effect of shape, thickness and number of contamination’s paths from insulators on radiation patterns is examined and radiation patterns for 230 kV and 400 kV transmission lines are simulated. Results show that variation in contamination path type, thickness and number of contamination paths don’t have sensible effect in radiation patterns. The simulated radiation patterns can be used to examine the effect of radiated noise on communication instruments around power transmission lines.
