- Secure time synchronization is a critical aspect of operational technology (OT) networks, essential for accurate event analysis, including trip events, Sequence of Events (SOE), and alarm logs, particularly in modern environments where diverse DCS, SCADA, and PLC systems are employed. Innovatively techniques for event analysis, such as leveraging hardwired signals and First out Logic, help identify the root cause of events but often depend on vendor-specific time synchronization solutions, limiting interoperability. This paper addresses the obsolescence of the Siclock 400 Siemens time synchronization system in Siemens TG DCS due to cyber security vulnerabilities and proposes a modern, secure alternative. We present an innovative approach to time synchronization using the Secure Universal Network Time Protocol (NTP), along with a novel solution for integrating IRIG signals into NTP for unified synchronization across different systems. This approach not only enhances cyber security but also reduces the costs associated with proprietary time synchronization systems, promoting a more cost-effective and secure OT network infrastructure.
