Recently, artificial neural network (ANNs) has been adopted widely for solving many complex problems in different fields due to its high performance and its ability to generalize. One of these fields is the medical image processing for diagnosing purposes. In this paper, tooth caries detection strategy is introduced based on a back propagation (BP) neural network for analyzing the dental X-ray images. The neural network used the inter-pixel autocorrelation as input features. The accuracy of classification is satisfactory where the tooth caries detection is clearly improved when compared to the diagnosing process performed by a rule-based computer assisted program and a group of doctors.
